Community development through the promotion of education is an integral part of the strategic plan of the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park (NNNP) in Congo. It is within this framework that this TNS protected area is implementing several projects to ensure the academic development of Bomassa village youths, particularly and recently through the construction of a new school building.
Created in the 1990s, the Bomassa primary school is an initiative to facilitate the establishment of an educational system in the area. This building, which houses about 120 children annually, played an important role in the creation of the first and only school in this small fishermen village and the development of its new elite class.
But…with time, this school built with temporary materials is in full deterioration and does not have the best learning conditions for our young champions! When walking around, it is common to see children distracted during lessons by passers-by and noise or complaining about the heat. Aware of its crucial importance, NNNP has developed, with the technical & financial support of FTNS, a project to build a new school for the children of Bomassa.
A more modern, but ecological building!
The construction work, which was launched in December 2020, consists of building a primary school comprised of 03 classrooms, an administrative block, an external sanitary block and a football stadium within a contractual period of 12 months. The new school in Bomassa will also have the capacity to comfortably accommodate over 150 pupils.
In order to achieve a building that is in tune with the environment, a solar electrification system has been chosen to ensure lighting (natural lighting will be favoured through adequate openings). The school will also be built in clay bricks and equipped with a rainwater catching system coupled with a borehole.
Located near the future workers’ camp, the new building is expected to meet certain environmental and technical standards. In order to ensure this, an FTNS monitoring team has been dispatched to the site to guarantee that the deliverables set out in the contracts and the construction standards are met, thereby enabling the construction of a sustainable building for the children and families of Bomassa.
