The adventure began in 1981 when the CAR government recognizes the uniqueness of Dzanga Sangha formally restricting hunting in the area through the creation of a Sanctuary for elephants and bongos.
Subsequently, in 1984, several studies confirmed the rich biodiversity of the area especially in endangered species such as the forest elephant, the bongo, the buffalo forests, the mountain gorilla, and the chimpanzee, attributes that pave way for its creation in December 1990.
The obstacle-void vision it provides in the Dzanga Bai salt clearing allows a very good unique visibility of wildlife, a key asset for tourism development in the region. The complex also contains a rich socio-cultural content and serves as habitat particularly for BaAka pygmy forests and Sangha Sangha fishermen.
Dzanga Sangha also provides tourists and the scientific community with several exceptional features such as the majestic elephants of Dzanga Bai, Bai Hokou’s habituated gorillas, all accompanied by magnificient modern infrastructure.
